One of the
main concerns for new owners is housebreaking puppies. Your new
pet must be properly house broken to prevent you from having to
constantly clean up its mess and getting harried over its frequent
bathroom mistakes. Here are a number of tips you can follow to ease the
process of housebreaking a puppy:
Tip # 1 –
Start Early
You should start training your dog as soon as possible. This should
begin when it’s still a young puppy as it’s most active and eager to
learn during its first six months of life.
If you put off housebreaking a dog may it usually makes
it more difficult
when your dog gets to be a bit older. It’s a lot easier to train a
puppy with a little patience and persistence.
Tip # 2 – Don’t Yell
Part of the art of housebreaking dogs is not to yell at your little dog
each time it makes a mess on the living room floor. Shouting and
smacking your puppy will create negative feelings in your pet. This
sort of action tends to scare and confuse your puppy.
Remember, all that it’s done is something that comes naturally. Your
puppy does not know yet it can’t relieve itself in the house. That’s
where potty training comes in.
Tip # 3 –
Crate Training
Good puppy housebreaking starts with dog
crate training. It’s never too early
to crate train your dog. Get a dog
training crate that is just large enough for your
pet to lie down in comfortably but not large enough such that it can do
its business in the crate.
If your puppy is a breed that grows quickly, you may want to get a
crate with a divider that you can raise once your puppy has become
larger. In any case, crate
training a puppy will teach it to hold
itself in and not to mess in the crate.
Be certain not to leave too much food and water in the crate that will
encourage it to use the bathroom more frequently. Your puppy will not
want to do its business in the crate because then it won’t have
anywhere to escape to after it’s done.
Tip # 4 –
Start a Schedule
Now that your puppy has been crate trained, it’s time to start your pet
on a dog housebreaking schedule. After your puppy has been fed, allow
it into the crate for a time. Then take your puppy outside to a certain
spot in the yard or a potty spot in the house for it to do its
business.
This must be consistently done, which means that it should be the same
spot to reinforce potty training. Your puppy will need to relieve
itself at least 6 to 7 times a day. That’s how often you’ll have to
train your puppy to do its potty in a specific spot.
After you’ve taken your pup for its potty a number of times, you’ll get
a feel of when its’ about to do its business and this will make the
potty training much easier. Your dog will need to do its business after
every meal. You should wait until it’s finished its business before
bringing your pet back into your home.
Tip # 5 –
Show Disapproval for Mistakes
After you have firmly engaged in dog housebreaking, you have to show
your disapproval for any mistakes that your pet makes in the house.
You
can do this with a stern voice that serves as a reprimand or you can
gently tap its snout saying ‘No’ and pointing to the mess on the
floor. Your dog will understand that it’s done a bad thing and will
remember to do its potty correctly next time.
Housebreaking puppies ideally should be started when your pet
is at a very young age. With these housebreaking tips for puppies you can ensure that potty training your dog becomes
easier.
You’ll then have a well behaved dog which does its business
outside on a schedule and you’ll also have a clean home.
