Dog
obedience training can be one of the biggest challenges of owning a
dog. You need plenty of patience and a firm commitment to train your
dog to obey your commands and instructions.
You must train your puppy to behave correctly. That’s where basic dog
obedience
training techniques will help you bond and
have a lasting companionship with your pet.
Name
Recognition Training
Before you commence any form of dog obedience puppy training, you must
first train it to recognize its name. Your puppy must understand that
it has a name. Calling your puppy repeatedly by its name will train it
to respond immediately when you voice its name.
This takes consistency and patience. You have to repeat your pet’s name
over and over again while making firm eye contact. This will help your
pet associate the word you repeat with its name.
Don’t Punish
When Training
Puppy obedience training doesn’t involve you shouting or punishing your
pet when it doesn’t follow your instructions promptly. A puppy is
boisterous and playful. In the first six months of life, it is easily
distracted and has a short attention span.
Punishment will instill negative feelings in your dog and it will avoid
following your commands for fear of getting punished. Especially, don’t
yell or scold your pet for trotting off mid-way during a training
session. Instead, gently guide your dog back and continue training.
Build a Good
Relationship
You should try to make puppy obedience training a fun experience for
both your pet and your self. Take time to make the training session fun
and interesting for your pet.
Work on building a good relationship with
your puppy so it will enjoy being trained and will be eager to please
you.
When your puppy is happy, it will learn the dog obedience commands and
instructions faster and you’ll be able to train your dog more quickly.
It’s important
that you bond and play with your pet as part of training your dog to
make the process enjoyable.
Training to
Sit
A critical command in dog training is for your puppy to
learn the instruction to ‘Sit’. You must show your pet what you mean by
making it sit while you keep repeating the word. Guide your dog
physically to understand this command by gently pushing down your dog’s
rump to a sitting position.
As you keep reinforcing the physical action with the command ‘Sit’,
your dog will quickly learn to associate the instruction with the
action. Give it a dog
treat each time it responds correctly to your
command. Soon, your pet will quickly sit each time you instruct it to
do so.
Training to
Come
Another important command in training is ‘Come’. You
have to train your puppy to understand this command because your pet
may on occasion be without its leash.
At these times, you will want to
control its behavior and telling it to come to you is a perfect way to
control your dog.
To train your dog to come to you, first of all instruct your dog to
‘Sit’. Ensure that you have leashed your dog. Now walk away from your
dog as far as its leash will allow you.
Do not pull on the leash. Once
you’re away from your pet, call to it by saying ‘come’ and gently tug
at the leash.
Your dog will gradually learn that it is supposed to walk towards you
when you say the word ‘Come’. Eventually, your dog will quickly run
towards you each time you repeat the ‘Come’ command.
Dog behavior training is an important feature of controlling
your
dog’s behavior quickly and effectively.
With patience and commitment,
you’ll be able to train your dog to obey your commands and instructions
promptly. You’ll then have a strong bond with your well trained dog for
years to come.
