Dog
behavioral problems can often be frustrating for dog owners to deal
with. The issues could range from aggression to biting, digging up the
yard and excessive jumping.
You can solve some of the more chronic problems through dog behavior
modification techniques that are consistently applied.
Don’t Allow
Complete Access
Never let your pet unrestricted freedom inside your home. That’s a
disaster waiting to happen. Dogs tend to look for opportunities so if
it finds food lying around in the living room, your pet will probably
eat it.
That sort of dog behavior may cause damage to your furniture and
household items especially if your dog likes to bites cushions and jump
on couches, windows and doors.
You have to restrict your dog to its living space and close off access
to other parts of your home. Nudge your dog away from rooms and areas
that are out of bounds by tapping its snout and saying ‘NO’. Then lead
your dog back to its own den or crate so it knows where it can
comfortable stay within your home.
Let Your Dog
Exercise
Keeping your dog indoors all day contributes to its boredom. It’s
unable to expend its excess energy and may start jumping against doors
and barking incessantly. Such dog behavior problems can be easily
overcome if you let your dog outdoors regularly to exercise.
You should schedule daily walks for your dog and guide it along on a
fixed leash. This provides your pet with an opportunity to stretch its
legs, roam about and savor new sights and scents.
Each session outdoors should also include some time for your dog to run
around the yard and play catch with you. This ensures you channel your
dog’s energy fruitfully so that it won’t be tempted to engage in
unacceptable behavior.
Ignoring Your
Dog
Dog behavior modification is crucial when you find your pet constantly
jumping at you whenever you step through the door in the evening or are
about to leave for work. An effective dog behavior training strategy is
to stay calm and ignore your dog for a quarter of an hour when you come
home.
Greet your pet calmly and don’t respond to his excited jumping.
Physically turn aside from your pet and remain detached until he stops
jumping.
Repeat this scenario each time you enter or exit your home. Before long
your pet will cease to jump excitedly at you or whine when you leave
the home.
Change Your
Routine
Your dog can sense it when you’re about to leave your home and suffer
from separation anxiety. Your pet dislikes being left alone all day and
can become destructive in your absence.
When you have the same routine like putting on your shoes and picking
up your briefcase just before stepping out of the house for work, your
pet will associate these actions with long hours of being home alone.
This will cause it to become anxious and even aggressive. You will
likely face some serious problems with dog behavior when you return.
To overcome them, vary your routine. Randomly put on your shoes and
grab your case but don’t leave home. Instead, just walk around the
living room or sit down on the couch to read a book.
Your pet will come to understand that your routine doesn’t necessarily
mean you’re leaving it for the day. The next time you have to go out,
your pet will remain clam. Reward him with doggie treats when his
behavior conforms with your expectations.
Give Your Pet
a Sandbox
If one of the problems you’re facing with your pet is its constant
digging in the yard, give it a sandbox to play in. Hide its favorite
chew toys or bones in the sand and guide your dog to the sandbox.
The sand is a lot softer for dogs to dig than the hard earth in your
yard. As your pet knows its toys are hidden in the sand, he’ll want to
dig them out and focus on the sandbox instead of the yard.
Dog behavior modification techniques are fairly easy to implement. They
should be done consistently to get the best results. Your problematic
dog will then transform to a well-behaved pet you’ll love to have
around the home!
